24th May – African Caribbean Seaside Memories workshop

Create a collage artwork using scrapbooking techniques

Date: Wednesday 24th May 10.30 a.m. – 12.30 p.m.
Location: Hastings Museum and Art Gallery, John’s Place,
Bohemia Road, Hastings TN34 1ET

This creative workshop is linked to the WE OUT HERE art exhibition showing at Hastings Contemporary 1st April – 4th June 2023. The exhibition features six artists of Caribbean heritage living in Hastings.

The aim of the workshop is for people of African Caribbean descent and the wider community to share their memories of visiting the seaside in the UK. In the past many people of African Caribbean heritage visited Hastings and other seaside towns on church trips, with sound systems, works outings – Beanos- etc. Maybe your family settled here years ago. Do you have photos, flyers, tickets – we would love to see them.

Bring along photographs, postcards, memorabilia, fabric, or anything else that reminds you of time spent at the seaside. These items – snippets of history – will be used to create a collage artwork using scrapbooking techniques, which will form part of a display of Seaside Memories at the Museum.

As an on going project exploring the Black presence in Hastings we would also like to collect items specific to Hastings and St Leonards On Sea that could be added to the Hastings Museum archive.

This is a free workshop but booking is essential. All materials will be supplied.
