Machine knitting is a craft in it’s own right, and was hugely popular from the 1950’s – 1980’, with people knitting in their homes, creating school jumpers, baby clothes and much more.
As with hand knitting it saw a decline in the 1990’s, but it is gaining in popularity again.
The artwork I created is based on the memories of a few members from the Priory Knits machine knitting club, and the Little Common Knitters.
The patterns on the wall document some of the many wool shops that were once based in Hastings.
The knitting machine used in this installation is a rare Pinestar machine that was made in the 1950’s.
