What about me? Artwork located on St Leonards sea front.

What About Me?

2015, machine knitted wool
Size: 70 cm x 85 cm

The idea for this artwork started with the news that a friend of mine had died. As I read the text while at the Brighton Art Gallery visiting the Fashion Cities Africa show my eyes filled with tears. The other people at the gallery had no idea of my pain. The sun was still shining outside and I thought no one is bothered or notices me.

Later that day I started to think about the recent EU referendum result. On the 23rd of June 2016, the UK voted to leave the European Union by a 52 to 48 percent margin, a decision that has been nicknamed “Brexit. The result has left the nation divided.

As I considered the decision I thought many people who voted for either Leave or Remain where saying  ‘What about me?’ This could be in relation to immigration or stocks and shares.

I have located the artwork on the seafront of St Leonards where homeless people sleep many of whom have addiction issues.  People walk past them every day never giving them a second glance, while they think ‘What about me?
